Position Overview

As a member of the Emergency Response (ER) Unit, the job of the Emergency Response Patroller will be to attend to incidents on highways and ensure safety for the travelling public. In this role, the patroller will also patrol the highways, identify deficiencies and make minor repairs to the highway on a daily basis.


  • Respond to calls dispatched from MTO with urgency, complete incident investigation along with
    the Emergency Response Operator and liaise with the supervisor and MTO as needed
  • Communicate with authorities on site – Police, Fire etc. and liaise with MTO central dispatch to ensure adequate resources are available to maintain public safety on the highways during inclement weather and road conditions
  • Provide traffic control at the accident scene. Set up and take down traffic control signs
  • Respond to emergency situations such as spills, accidents, inclement weather and assist in
    implementing an emergency plan as needed
  • Make snow and ice control decisions during winter and initiate equipment and operator call
  • Assist in the identification of deficiencies by performing regular daily patrols of the highways
  • Make minor repairs to the highway
  • Conduct daily circle checks on vehicles. Clean and maintain vehicles, as well as perform minor
  • Maintain accurate documentation - Hours of service, Fuel records, Incident reports, Time sheets,
    Diaries, Logs etc.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Class D commercial license with air brake endorsement (Z) is required
  • A high school diploma is required
  • Some experience in snow and ice control along with knowledge of OTM book 7 is a strong asset

    with rapidly shifting priorities
  • Problem solving skills and decision making skills
  • Basic computer skills to navigate weather, equipment data, Miller and MTO work sites
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal) to accurately document daily activities,
    incident reports and deficiency logs
  • Willingness to work assigned day, night and weekend shifts.
  • Ability to lift heavy weights (50 pounds) and work/drive outside in inclement weather conditions
